KVD on Spinnerbait Trailers

Posted on May 22, 2021April 26, 2021 By PracticalAngler No Comments on KVD on Spinnerbait Trailers

Ask 10 bass fisherman how they feel about the use of trailers on spinnerbaits and you’re likely to get almost as many answers.

After reading an article by Kevin VanDam recently discussing his approach to the use of spinnerbait trailers, I was surprised to find his views on using spinnerbait trailers were much like mine.

spinnerbait trailers

Generally speaking when fishing during the warmer periods of the year in either clear or stained water neither KVD nor myself use trailers on spinnerbaits. When encountering conditions where the water is significantly colder (during the late fall, throughout the winter or early spring) or when the water is dirty we both agree it’s time to break-out the plastic and add a trailer to our spinnerbaits.

Closer Look at Canyon Reservoirs

Posted on May 19, 2021November 2, 2021 By PracticalAngler No Comments on Closer Look at Canyon Reservoirs

When most people think of the western U.S., especially the desert southwest, they often visualize towering rock pinnacles, vast expanses of wind-blown sand and deep sinuous canyons.

As a matter of fact, many of us yet to travel to this part of this great nation, have only experienced the area and its relatively unique landscape via photos or videos.

Once the opportunity to visit this spectacular region becomes reality, the magnificence and grandeur of the scenery is more than breath-taking. The same reaction holds true for all of us non-native bass anglers when we first experience the nature of fishing canyon reservoirs.

A World of Rocks, Rocks and More Rocks!

Canyon reservoirs are characterized by deep, narrow, rock-rimmed valleys encased by steep rock walls and bluffs often reaching as high into the sky as they dive deep to the reservoir’s bottom.

Depending on the elevation of the water’s surface, many of the reservoir shorelines

Basics of Fishing the Swim Jig

Posted on May 7, 2021May 7, 2021 By PracticalAngler No Comments on Basics of Fishing the Swim Jig

Fishing a bass jig with a craw-type trailer almost seems natural to most bass anglers but there is one jig-fishing technique (namely the swim jig) that is a mystery to many.

Unlike conventional jig fishing techniques such as bottom-hopping, pitching or flipping, the swim jig method uses an actual swimming retrieve rather than the standard drop, hop or dragging presentations.

Though a straight swimming approach is preferred by many, experimenting with different retrieves such as stop and go, imparting a rise and fall action during the retrieve, or imparting a pulsing effect can be pure dynamite …

I recall my first experiences catching fish while swimming a jig;

What Is Hole-sitting?

Posted on May 5, 2021May 4, 2021 By PracticalAngler No Comments on What Is Hole-sitting?

I was reading an article in a popular bass fishing magazine recently where they discussed a number of different fishing patterns being used by the pros during the last two years.

Although they presented information about several different patterns or trends there was one particular pattern that caught my eye.  After reflecting on the description of this pattern, I really have to question whether or not it can be considered new …

The pattern I’m talking about is something they referred to as hole-sitting.
